Chapel Hill - The University of North Carolina volleyball team defeated the visiting Maryland Terrapins Saturday night in four games, 30-23, 30-22, 21-30, 30-16. Senior Molly Pyles led the charge with a double-double, finishing with 19 kills and 18 digs. Junior setter McKenzie Byrd added a double-double of her own with 10 digs and 54 assists.
The two teams traded points early in game one before the Tar Heels took over. Led by a solid defensive effort, Carolina (9-7, 4-1 ACC) went ahead by as many as eight at 22-14 and rolled to a 30-23 win. UNC registered 19 digs in the game, including seven by Pyles, and held the Terrapins (6-7, 1-2 ACC) to a .000 hitting percentage.
Carolina continued to dominate in game two, taking a comfortable 30-22 win. The Tar Heels led throughout and Maryland never got closer than three after UNC opened with an 8-2 run. Carolina was once again stellar defensively, collecting 23 digs for the game and keeping the Terps below the .100 mark for the second time. Nine different Tar Heels had at least one dig in the frame, and junior Taylor Rayfield led the way with five.
Maryland played its best game of the night in the third frame, as the Terps out hit Carolina .348 to .087 and cruised to a 30-21 win. Sarah Treadwell hit .533 for the game, collecting nine kills on 15 swings with only one error. She finished the night with 18 kills and 15 digs to lead the Terrapins.
The Tar Heels righted the ship in the fourth and final game and finished off Maryland, 30-16. Carolina finally got things going offensively, hitting a match-high .471 for the game. After the score was tied at 1-all, UNC led the rest of the way and secured the four-game win.
Carolina is back on the court Tuesday night as the team travels to Raleigh to take on area rival NC State at 7 p.m.
