CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina men's soccer team (8-6-2, 3-2-0 ACC) ran its season-best winning streak to five matches Wednesday with a 2-0 victory over William and Mary (9-4-3) at Fetzer Field. Senior Marcus Storey and sophomore Jamie Watson provided the offense for the Tar Heels, who are riding their longest winning streak since the 2001 squad won nine straight.
Storey put the Tar Heels up 1-0 with his sixth goal of the season at the 25:24 mark. Watson, who beat a couple of Tribe defenders just past midfield, served the ball toward the box, and Storey fired the Tar Heels' first shot of the night from about 15 yards out into the upper right-hand corner of the net. The score was the 29th of Storey's collegiate career and tied him for eighth all-time at Carolina with Donald Cogsville, who starred in Chapel Hill from 1984-88.
Watson added Carolina's second goal on a penalty kick in the 37th minute. After being fouled in the box, Watson took the kick and buried past William and Mary keeper Kris Rake in the lower right corner of the net for a 2-0 Tar Heel advantage. The goal was Watson's fifth of the season, equaling his 2003 total.
UNC goalkeeper Ford Williams, who has started the last seven games in goal for the Tar Heels, posted his second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. The entire Carolina defense was again solid, limiting the Tribe to just six shots and seven corners. The Tar Heels have now won six of their last seven matches, outscoring their opponents 14-3 over this stretch.
Storey now leads Carolina with 18 points this season, while Watson is second with 13 points. Both players were named to the preseason watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy.
The Tar Heels play their final home match of the season against Wake Forest at 2 p.m. Sunday. Carolina then travels to Clemson to close out the regular season on November 7.
