CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshman striker Jaime Gilbert rocketed a shot into the upper right corner in the 64th minute to break a tie and lift top-ranked North Carolina to a 2-1 victory over No. 15 Duke in women's soccer action Thursday night at Fetzer Field. A crowd of 3,386 fans watched the game which earned North Carolina one point in the 2004-05 Carlyle Cup standings, the all-sports trophy contested between the two schools sponsored by Carlyle and Company. In a tight soccer match between the two old rivals, North Carolina struck first on a goal by senior Anne Morrell just 3:14 into the match. Kacey White, a junior midfielder fed a ball from the right side into the penalty area where Gilbert flicked it on with her head to Morrell's foot. Morrell, unmarked at the six-yard line, finished the ball into the Duke goal to make the score 1-0. UNC controlled most of the play in the first half with seven shots to one for Duke but the Blue Devils did create several dangerous situation on three first-half corner kicks.
Duke came out with the momentum in the second half and capitalized with a goal by junior striker Carolyn Riggs at the 50:56 mark. Carolyn Ford lofted a pass into the box that Riggs gathered in. She took on UNC goalkeeper Aly Winget and a trio of UNC defenders and slotted the ball perfectly into the left side of the goal for her fifth goal of the campaign.
UNC almost took the lead at the 63:29 when Lori Chalupny's hard strike from 20 yards out clanged off the crossbar. The ball bounded out beyond the penalty area where UNC's Jaime Gilbert eventually got control and struck a hard shot from 25 yards out that scorched the upper right 90 to give Carolina a 2-1 lead at 63:53.
Both teams had dangerous chances left to score. At 82:57, Morrell had a chance to score into an open Duke goal but Ford headed the ball away. Duke had an outstanding chance to tie at 85:58 when Carolyn Riggs had an unguarded shot from the top of the box but Aly Winget made the save to preserve the UNC lead.
