Tar Heel Men's Swimmers & Divers Widen Lead At Nike Cup Championships

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Freshmen Kelly Woodruff and Lindsey Marck won individual events for the North Carolina women's swimming and diving team Friday night and the Tar Heel men's swimmers and divers used their outstanding depth to increase their lead to over 220 points at the Nike Cup Swimming and Diving Championships at Koury Natatorium.
North Carolina's men lead after the second day with 743.5 points, 220.5 points ahead of second-place Clemson. Virginia Tech is third with 387.5 points, slightly ahead of the Tennessee Volunteers who have 367.5 points. Syracuse is fifth with 307.5 points and East Carolina sixth with 209 points.
On the women's side, Purdue extended its lead on day two and now has 682.5 points while the Tar Heels are second with 522.5. Kansas is third with 393 followed by Virginia Tech with 384.5, Clemson with 282, East Carolina with 145 and Syracuse with 142.
Both UNC 200-yard medley relays won their respective heats Friday night, while finishing second overall. Kansas captured the women's event and Virginia Tech took the men's 200 medley relay.
Kelly Woodruff and Amanda Smith went 1-2 in the 400-yard individual medley for the Tar Heels with Woodruff winning in a career best 4:20.36. Lizzy Bruce dropped over eight seconds from her preliminary time to win the consolation final. On the men's side, Casey Dauw broke his own Nike Cup and Koury Natatorium pool records in the event as the Tennessee Vol went 3:47.17, after going 3:47.32 a year ago. Dauw's time was also an automatic NCAA qualifying time.
North Carolina freshman Lindsey Marck won the women's 100-yard butterfly and moved into third on UNC all-time record list with a time of 54.41. Jessie Brosch finished third in the race with a time good enough to put her in a tie for seventh all-time in UNC history . UNC went 2-3-4 in the 100-yard butterfly in the form of EddyMatkovic, Josh Glasco and Jon Van Assen. Van Assen moved into eighth all-time on the UNC depth chart with a clocking of 48.99.
Tommy Rappold of Clemson won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, setting a Nike Cup record in 100 fly at 47.76. Kevin Furlong of Virginia Tech was part of his team's winning 200 medley relay team and he won the 100-yard breaststroke.
North Carolina junior Jon Albrecht finished second in the men's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.44, good for fourth place on the all-time UNC depth chart in the event.
