Six in Double Figures as Tar Heels Open with Win

Senior forward Jawad Williams and junior forward Rashad McCants scored 21 points apiece to lead the University of North Carolina to a 113-54 win over Winston-Salem State Friday night at the Smith Center.
The exhibition was the first of two preseason contests for the Tar Heels, who are ranked No. 3 in the country.
McCants scored five points in a 7-0 UNC run to open the game. Carolina never trailed and led by as many as 31 points in the opening half. The Tar Heels shot 59.4 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes, then topped that mark by shooting 64.9 percent from the field in the second half.

After the initial 7-0 run to start the game, the Rams made it 7-3 on a basket and free throw by forward Audly Wehner. The Tar Heels then went on a 11-0 run, including seven straight points by Jawad Williams.
Carolina led 52-25 at intermission, led by 13 points from Jawad Williams and nine by McCants. UNC forced 13 first-half turnovers.
The second half featured a run of 11 straight points to give the Tar Heels an 82-40 lead with 8:42 to play and a 10-0 run that extended the margin to 92-42 with 6:22 to play.
In addition to 21 points by Jawad Williams and McCants, the Tar Heels got 15 points and three assists from Jackie Manuel, 12 points and six rebounds from David Noel, 11 points and five boards from freshman Marvin Williams and 10 points and two blocks from Sean May.
Junior guard Raymond Felton handed out 11 of Carolina's 34 assists (on 43 field goals). Senior guard Melvin Scott had six assists and no turnovers.
Winston-Salem State was led in scoring by guard Alleggrie Guinn, who had 17 points, and Wehner, who had 11. The Rams committed 28 turnovers that led to 32 Tar Heel points.
The Tar Heels return to preseason action next Friday, November 12, when they play host to Mount Olive College. Tipoff at the Smith Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
