Miller Seeks 1,000th Win In Storied Career Sunday

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina fencing coach Ron Miller will be seeking his 1,000th career victory Sunday when the Tar Heel men's and women's teams play host to Princeton, Rutgers and Penn State at Carmichael Auditorium beginning at 8 a.m. Miller has compiled a 999-418 (71 percent) record since he first began coaching fencing at UNC in 1967-68.
The Tar Heels head into Sunday's meets with the men at 5-0 this season and the women at 0-0. Miller has coached the men to a 532-213 mark (73 percent) since his first team went 8-1 in 1967-68. His women are 467-205 (69 percent) since 1971-72.
A Florida State University alumnus, Miller has led 25 UNC men's teams to NCAA Top 20 finishes while the women's teams have finished in the Top 20 a total of 20 times. The men have nine Top 10 finishes and the women five.
He has coached 17 All-America fencers at UNC, seven in sabre, seven in epee and three in foil. Amongst his proteges have been Olympians Nhi Lan Le in women's epee and John Friedberg in men's sabre. Freidberg was also an NCAA individual champion in men's sabre. Of the All-Americas, one was a three-time selection and three more were two-time choices.
When the Atlantic Coast Conference sponsored men's fencing as a championship sport for 10 years, Miller's team won eight titles and finished third twice.
In unofficial ACC tournament meetings, UNC's men have won 16 titles outright, tied for the championship four times and finished second seven times. In unofficial women's ACC tournaments, Carolina has won 18 outright titles, tied for first six times, finished second eight times and tied for second once.
