McCants Named Hardee's Carolina Student-Athlete of the Week

Rashad McCants averaged 23.5 points in two wins over Indiana and Kentucky and is the Hardee's Carolina Student-Athlete of the Week for November 30-December 5.
McCants had 19 points (to lead all scorers) in Carolina's 70-63 win at Indiana and 28 points (to lead all scorers) in Carolina's 91-78 win over 8th-ranked Kentucky. The Asheville, N.C., junior hit 5 of 8 from three-point range and added two steals in the win at Indiana. McCans scored 20 first-half points in win over Kentucky. Went 4 for 7 from three-point range and 10 for 11 from the free throw line against UK. For the week, he averaged 23.5 points and was 13 of 28 from the floor (46 percent), 9 of 15 (60 percent) from three-point range and 16 of 19 (84.2 percent) from the free throw line.

A senior tri-captain, Hanson led the Tar Heels to a decisive 203-97 victory over NC State, boosting the 16th-ranked UNC squad to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC. Hanson won two individual events and also swam on one of the Carolina winning relay teams against the Wolfpack. Hanson won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.03 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:59.50. She also swam the second leg on Carolina's winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Alex Maciag

Freshman Alex Maciag captured first place at 174 pounds to lead the host Tar Heels at the 2004 Irwin-Carolina Open Saturday at Carmichael Auditorium. A winner in his weight class at the season-opening Missouri Open, Maciag earned his second collegiate title with a 6-3 win over Appalachian State's Corey Pendergrass in the final. He opened with a 22-6 technical fall win over Citadel's Allen Elliott and never looked back, posting a 4-0 record on the day. Maciag, who defeated Virginia's Michael Grogan in the semifinals, is now 8-2 on the season.
