North Carolina swept a doubleheader with Sam Houston State on Friday as seniors Emily Price and Dionne Streete powered the Tar Heels. North Carolina won 4-3, 5-0. Price hit her third home run of the season in the first game and then followed in the second game with a four-hit performance. Sophomore Crystal Cox supplied the pitching excellence as she pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief in game one, and then pitched a four-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in game two.
The Tar Heels fell behind 1-0 in game one in the third inning, but came back to tie the game when freshman Anna Evans stole home. In the fourth inning, Evans drove in junior Jessica Young with an RBI single to make the score 2-1. Emily Price then broke up a 2-2 tie with a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
Sam Houston State started a rally in the sixth inning and closed the gap to one run, but Crystal Cox came in to shut down Sam Houston State, getting the final out of the sixth inning, and then pitching a perfect seventh. Alison Yin pitched five innings, letting off just one earned run for the win.
In game two, Cox pitched seven scoreless innings and Price went 4-4 hitting. The Tar Heels got a run on the board in the first inning as Dionne Streete singled and senior Jessica Graziano drove her in with a RBI flyout. North Carolina broke open the game in the third inning, as Streete led off with a solo home run to make it 2-0. Sophomore Julia Bove followed with a single and Price and Young hit back-toback doubles to make the score 4-0. Pinch runner Marissa May scored UNC's final run in the third, as she crossed the plate on an error by the first baseman.
The Tar Heels improve to 5-3 on the season and will face their biggest challenge of the season on Saturday as they play a doubleheader against No. 4 Oklahoma in Norman as part of the OU/Nike Tournament. The first game starts at 2:30 p.m.
