CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - No. 17 North Carolina sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs in the first inning en route to an 11-6 victory over Seton Hall Sunday at Boshamer Stadium. With the win, the Tar Heels (3-0) swept a three-game series from the Pirates (0-3) for the fifth time in the last six years.
Nine different Tar Heels hit safely and six drove in runs, led by third baseman Sammy Hewitt, who went 3-for-5 with a run batted in, and designated hitter Matt Ellington, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Junior lefty Bo Dickerson (1-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen after not allowing a hit and striking out two in 1.1 innings. Carolina starter Adam Kalkhof went four innings, allowing one run on four hits and two walks. He struck out six, as six Tar Heel pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts on the day.
In the eight-run first, second baseman Greg Mangum and first baseman Justin Webb each had two hits. Mangum got the rally started with a bunt single and then took third on Webb's first single of the frame. Right fielder Marshall Hubbard drove in the first run with a double off the right field wall, which scored Mangum. Webb then scored on a passed ball to push the lead to 2-0.
Following a walk to catcher Chris Iannetta, Ellington came through with a two-run double that scored both Hubbard and Iannetta to give the Tar Heels a 4-0 advantage. Ellington later came home on an RBI single from Hewitt.
After shortstop Craig Corrado reached on an error, Mangum picked up his second hit of the inning with a two-run double that plated both left fielder Jay Cox, who walked, and Hewitt. That hit gave Carolina a 7-0 lead and chased Seton Hall starter Jake Haggerty from the game with just one out in the first. Corrado later scored the eighth run of the inning on Webb's second single.
Haggerty (0-1) allowed six hits and eight runs (seven earned) in one-third of an inning. D.J. Cunningham came on in relief to get the Pirates out of the first and limit the Tar Heels to just one hit over the next three innings.
Seton Hall got on the board in the third on a solo home run to left by center fielder Patrick Sullivan and scored three in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-4. First baseman Tim Pahuta homered to lead off the inning, and left fielder Brandon Cohen added an RBI single. Third baseman Joey Scott later scored when designated hitter Justin Keleman grounded into a double play.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ellington tacked on an RBI single to push the Tar Heel lead to 9-4, but Seton Hall added a run in the seventh on a single by Scott.
UNC scored two more runs in the bottom of the eighth when pinch hitter Mark Griffin ripped and RBI double and later scored on a passed ball.
Catcher Chris Fulda and Scott each had three hits for the Pirates.
Carolina returns to action against Gardner-Webb Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
