Courtney Bumpers Named Conference Gymnast of Year

PITTSBURGH - Courtney Bumpers, a sophomore from Stone Mountain, Ga., was selected as the 2004 East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Year, EAGL officials announced Friday. Bumpers was the second UNC gymnast in the nine-year history of the EAGL to be named Gymnast of the Year. Alumna Brooke Wilson was a co-Gymnast of the Year winner in 2000.
The 2003 EAGL Rookie of the Year, Bumpers is ranked number one in the nation on floor exercise with a 10.00 Regional Qualifying Score. She has had six perfect 10.0 scores on the floor in ten meets this season. Honored as the EAGL Gymnast of the Week three times this season, Bumpers is also the 12th-ranked all-around in the nation. She ranks 12th on balance beam and 24th on vault.
A 2003 All-America, Bumpers set the North Carolina all-around record in 2004 with a 39.725 score on February 20 and posted four of the top six all-around scores in the EAGL this season. She also led North Carolina to a 22-1 record and a No. 13 national ranking.
umpers was named first team All-EAGL as an all-around in addition to earning first team All-EAGL notice on vault, beam and floor. She was named first team All-EAGL in vault, beam and all-around for the second year in a row.
umpers was one of three Carolina gymnasts to be named first team All-EAGL in the all-around. Junior Olivia Trusty and freshman Christine Robella were also named to the first team. Like Bumpers, Trusty was a unanimous selection.
Competing as an all-around for the first time this season, Trusty was the 22nd-ranked all-around performer in the nation. She has a 39.445 R.Q.S. and has averaged 39.257 for the year. She has a high score of 39.700 in the all-around and was named as the EAGL Gymnast of the Week in January. Trusty was also a unanimous first team All-EAGL selection on vault and was second team All-EAGL on bars. She was also named first team All-EAGL on floor.
Robella, who had a 39.675 all-around score for her seasonal high, is the 40th-ranked all-around in the nation. Robella also earned first team All-EAGL honors on bars and floor. She was named second team All-EAGL on vault.
Senior Maddy Curley was second team All-EAGL on bars and beam.
The Tar Heels will compete in the ninth-annual EAGL Championships tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the University of Pittsburgh.
