DURHAM, N.C. - Lance Zimmerman's goal with 1:03 gone in overtime lifted the No. 8 North Carolina (5-1, ACC 1-0) men's lacrosse team to a 10-9 victory over No. 5 Duke (4-2, ACC 0-2) Saturday afternoon before 1,462 at Koskinen Stadium. The victory completed a four-game road trip for Coach John Haus' Tar Heels in which UNC went 4-0 with all four wins coming against ranked opponents.
Saturday's game was a classic thriller between two arch-rivals and was the first Duke-UNC game to go to overtime since April 19, 1986 when Corey Gavitt's overtime goal just seconds into overtime lifted Carolina to a 9-8 win over the Blue Devils at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill. Neither team Saturday led by more than one goal and there were nine ties in the game before Zimmerman's winning goal, which came off an assist from Scott Falatach.
Offensively, the Tar Heels were led by Jed Prossner who had four goals while both Andrew McElduff and Johnny Seivold each had the first multi-goal games of their Tar Heel careers with two goals apiece. Pater Lamade and Chris Haunss each scored three times for the Blue Devils and Lamade also had two assists. Matt Danowski, Duke's leading scorer, was limited to one assist by the defense of UNC senior Ronnie Staines.
Duke goalkeeper Aaron Fenton was spectacular as he made 19 saves while facing 37 Tar Heel shots. UNC outshot the Blue Devils 37-27 and had a 51-31 ground ball edge but the Blue Devils' hung tight as Carolina had trouble clearing the ball all day with eight failed clears. UNC goalkeeper Paul Spellman played the final three quarters and overtime and had 10 saves while allowing six goals.
Another huge edge for UNC was at the X where senior Kevin Frew won 18 of 22 faceoffs against four different Blue Devil faceoff specialists. Frew won the faceoff in overtime, grabbed one of his game-high 13 ground balls and a little less than a minute later the Tar Heels ran the winning play.
UNC started the scoring on a goal by Andrew McElduff with 3:22 gone in the first quarter. With 9:09 left in the period, Lamade fed Dan Flannery for a Duke goal and a brief lead for the Blue Devils. With 8:24 left in the first quarter, UNC regained the lead as Ryan Blair claimed a ground ball and scored into an empty goal.
The Blue Devils took the lead 3-2 on goals by Chris Haunss and Grant Byczek before Carolina's Jed Prossner scored two unassisted goals to make the score 4-3 at the end of the opening period.
Matt Zash and Haunss scored to give Duke a lead of 5-4 with 7:08 left before halftime. Carolina would tie the score before halftime, however, as UNC's Johnny Seivold took a pass from Zimmerman and scored 1:59 before halftime shortly after a Tar Heel timeout.
The Blue Devils possessed the ball for most of the third quarter and led Carolina 7-6 going into the final 15 minutes after limiting UNC to only four shots in the period. After Prossner scored for UNC less than three minutes into the quarter, both teams went on a long scoring drought before goals by Lamade and Haunss with 1:51 and 1:14 left in the period gave Duke the lead. The latter goal came when a Tar Heel defender inadvertently cleared the ball into the goal and Haunss was credited with the goal as the Duke in home.
oth teams' offenses clicked well early in the final period. Johnny Seivold tied the score for UNC off an assist by Bryant Will with 13:25 left only to see Lamade score his second goal of the game just 35 seconds later. But Prossner scored on a nice dodge to retie the score just 19 seconds later. Duke took its last lead on Lamade's third goal of the match with 9:37 to play but McElduff scored on a long, hard shot with 8:05 to play to make it 8-8.
After Fenton made a point blank save on a shot by Mike McCall with four minutes to play, Duke possessed the ball until the closing seconds of play when Carolina was able to force a turnover and get off a last second shot by Falatach which was saved by Fenton right at the final horn of regulation.
Carolina then came out for the overtime, won its 18th faceoff and executed its offense, leading to Zimmerman's goal, his second of the season.
UNC's win broke a four-game overtime losing streak for the Tar Heels over the past two seasons. Carolina had not won an overtime game since beating Navy 11-10 in an NCAA record six overtimes on March 2, 2002.
Carolina's game with Cornell scheduled for this coming Tuesday has been postponed following the tragic death this past Wednesday of Cornell player and team captain George Boiardi. No makeup date for the game has been determined yet. UNC's next game will now be against No. 2 Maryland (5-0, ACC 1-0) at Fetzer Field next Saturday at 1 p.m. Duke plays host to Georgetown next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium.
Carolina earned one point with the victory in the 2003-04 Carlyle Cup competition, the all-sports competition between Duke and UNC. Duke leads the current Carlyle Cup standings 10-8
