RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina earned wins in the second varsity eight and novice four races during a morning of competition Saturday at Lake Wheeler. Georgetown claimed victories in the varsity four, novice eight and second novice eight, while Indiana won the final race of the day, the varsity eight.
Saturday's race was the only one this season that UNC will host. "It was great to have a home event," Carolina coach Sarah Haney said. "We were really excited to have so many spectators and support people there, and we were pleased to have Georgetown and Indiana make the trip." The Tar Heels practice at University Lake, but that body of water doesn't have a long enough stretch to accomodate a standard 2,000-meter course so the race was held in Raleigh.
Saturday's racing took place under sunny skies, with calm water and light tailwinds on the first half of the course. In the second 1,000 meters, crews encountered rough waters with increasing tailwinds. The racing was the first for the UNC varsity since a meeting with Clemson on March 13.
"I was happy with the second varsity eight for getting the win, and I think we can row a little better than we did," Haney said. "In that sense, it's a little frustrating that we didn't row as well as we have been rowing in practice.
"In the varsity eight, we beat ourselves. We rowed our race until the last 600 meters then things got a little frantic. That was disappointing, but we made improvements from our race against Clemson. Each race, piece by piece, we're getting a little better. I think the team knows that and feels pretty good about it."
The win by the UNC four highlighted the novice racing, and novice coach Laura Fogt plans to see how that boat stacks up against varsity competition in the coming weeks. At the same time, she's looking for better performances from the other novice boats. "In both of the eights, I didn't think we performed up to our potential," Fogt said. "Our rowing wasn't as technically sound as it has been and that affected our speed. We didn't do what we were capable of doing, so we'll look forward to next week to try to improve."
Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to Bloomington, Ind., where Carolina will race Cincinnati, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, Louisville and host Indiana on Saturday, April 3.
