Jordan Institute for Families Raises More Than $50,000 at Recent Gala

CHAPEL HILL -- The Jordan Institute for Families, a part of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Social Work, raised more than $50,000 at a fund-raising gala held April 24 at For Garden's Sake in Durham.
Guest speakers at the event included UNC Chancellor James Moeser; Michael Jordan, UNC graduate and former NBA basketball star; and Howard Lee, chairman of the State Board of Education, former state senator and School of Social Work alumnus.
The event was hosted by JoAnn and Walter Davis, owners of For Garden's Sake. Walter Davis, a former UNC trustee, is a longtime supporter and benefactor of the university. Event co-hosts were former Tar Heel men's basketball head coach Dean Smith and his wife, Linnea; Lee and his wife, Lillian; and the Jordan family.
News anchor Debra Morgan of WRAL-TV emceed the event. Woody Durham was auctioneer for the event's live auction.
The Jordan Institute was established in 1996 with a private gift from Michael Jordan. The institute is the research, training and technical assistance arm of the School of Social Work. The institute brings together experts, including families, to develop and test policies and practices that strengthen families and engage communities.
