BALTIMORE, MD. - Peter LeSueur scored with 56 seconds remaining to lift No. 2 Johns Hopkins to a 10-9 victory over No. 5 North Carolina in men's lacrosse Saturday afternoon before 2,982 fans at chilly Homewood Field. The loss dropped Carolina to 5-3 on the season as the Tar Heels look forward to hosting defending NCAA champion Virginia next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fetzer Field. Hopkins improved to 6-1 as the Blue Jays have won 10 in a row over Carolina.
The loss negated a tremendous effort by UNC which dominated most of the game statistically. Carolina outshot the Blue Jays 45-37 and won the faceoff battle 13-10 but could never get a comfortable lead in the game.
Jed Prossner led UNC with three goals and an assists while Mike McCall scored twice for UNC and Lance Zimmerman had a goal and two assists.
Hopkins jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead but a goal by Prossner and a behind-the-back goal by McCall with 10 seconds left in the first quarter tied the game at the end of the first 15 minutes.
UNC and Hopkins traded goals in the second quarter but a tally by Zimmerman 2:17 before halftime put the Heels up 5-4 at intermission.
When McCall scored his second goal 1:20 into the third quarter the Tar Heels had their first two-goal lead of the contest but it was short-lived as the Blue Jays were rewarded with back-to-back extra-man goals off the sticks of Conor Ford and Jake Byrne.
UNC retook a two-goal cushion on goals by Prossner and defenseman Stephen McElduff, the first of McElduff's career, but again Hopkins quickly tied the game before the end of the third quarter on goals by Kyle Harrison and Conor Ford.
Hopkins took a 9-8 lead on a goal by Ford with 9:53 to play but UNC got an equalizer on a great individual play by Prossner with 4:48 to play.
UNC had several shots to take the lead but could not find the back of the goal. Eventually the Blue Jays won possession and set up with winning play for LeSueur. Hopkins won the ensuing faceoff and the Tar Heels were never able to regain possession.
Hopkins travels to play at Duke next Saturday while UNC hosts Virginia at Fetzer Field at 1 p.m.
