CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Freshman right-hander Daniel Bard allowed just one run over eight innings to lead No. 16 North Carolina (35-14) to a 4-1 victory over No. 2 Miami (36-9) Friday at the Hurricanes' Mark Light Field. With the win, Bard improves to 8-2 on the season and ties the school record for victories by a freshman. The Tar Heels, who sent Miami to its first loss since April 25, also snapped a season-long three-game losing streak.

Junior first baseman Wes Moyer went 2-for-3 with three runs batted in for his third multi-hit game of the season, and junior right fielder Marshall Hubbard also added two hits, including his team-best 15th home run of the season to pace the Tar Heels at the plate.
Hubbard gave the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead in the second with a solo shot to left center, his first home run since a two-run shot at Duke April 22. Hubbard's last six home runs have come on the road.
Moyer later pushed the lead to 4-0 in the fourth with a bases-clearing double to right. Walks to catcher Chris Iannetta and left fielder Jay Cox sandwiched around a single through the right side by Hubbard loaded the bases for Moyer, who came through with the two-out base hit. Miami right fielder Richard Gionnotti got a glove on the ball but could not make the play.
The Canes got on the board in the seventh when catcher Erick San Pedro singled to right to score center fielder Brian Barton, who led off the inning with a single. San Pedro's hit was his third of the night.
Hurricane starter J.D. Cockroft worked six innings, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks. He struck out three before giving way to Ricky Orta at the start of the seventh.
Carolina head coach Mike Fox is now 4-1 against Miami. The Tar Heels improved to 5-5 this season against the top 25 with the win.
The series continues with Garry Bakker on the mound for the Tar Heels at 7 p.m. Saturday and Florida native Andrew Miller scheduled to pitch game three at Noon Sunday.
