Pinehurst, N.C. - Martin Ureta, a rising sophomore on the Univesity of North Carolina's golf team, captured the championship at the 104th North and South Amateur played at the Pinehurst #2 Course June 29-July 4.
Ureta, from Santiago, Chile, defeated Ryan Posey of Dallas, Texas, 3 and 2 in the 36-hole final match. Ureta grabbed the lead 3 up after eight holes and his lead grew to 5 up after 13 holes. However, Posey, a rising sophomore at Oklahoma State, closed the gap and cut the margin to 3 down at the halfway point. After 21 holes, Posey had cut the deficit to 1 down, but Ureta was 3 up again after 27 holes. Ureta won holes 29 and 31 while Posey won at 30 and 33. The two players halved the 32nd hole with pars. Ureta closed the match out 3 and 2 when both players made birdie four on the 34th hole.
Ureta's trek to the North and South Championship started with a first-round victory over Wake Forest's Sean Moore, 2 and 1. Ureta then defeated Matt Robinson, 3 and 2, in the second round and then beat Chris Wheeler, 4 and 3, in the third round. Ureta then won his quarterfinal match, 1 up, over Duke golfer Ryan Blaum. That set up a semifinal match with Reid Darsie of Chapel Hill who also attends Carolina. Ureta came out on top, 5 and 4, to set up the 36-hole match final with Posey.
Ureta is the seventh Carolina golfer to win the North and South, one of the nations's most prestigious amateur events. Earlier winners were Harvie Ward in 1949; John McGough in 1979; Bryan Sullivan in 1983; Davis Love, III in 1984; Jack Nicklaus, II in 1985 and Tom Scherrer in 1990
