CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Virginia Commonwealth junior forward Dominic Oduro scored four goals and junior midfielder Ricardo Opoku added three assists to lead the Rams (2-2-0) to a 5-2 win over host North Carolina (1-2-1) Sunday in the final game of the 2004 Carolina Nike Classic at Fetzer Field.
Senior forward Marcus Storey and freshman midfielder Dax McCarty each had a goal and an assist for the Tar Heels, who have now lost four consecutive matches at home dating back to last season.
Storey got the Tar Heels on the board in the eighth minute with his first goal of the season, a header right in front of the net on assists from Ray Fumo and Dax McCarty. Fumo tapped a corner kick to McCarty who served the ball to the center of net, where Storey headed it past VCU keeper Saul Montero for a 1-0 Tar Heel lead.
Just over three minutes later, the Rams tied the match at one with the first of Oduro's four goals, a six-yard shot past UNC goalkeeper Ford Williams. Brian Morris assisted on the first goal for VCU.
Later in the opening half, the Rams took a 2-1 lead thanks to a Veit Schaidinger header at the 31:22 mark. Stephen Shirley served a corner kick into the six-yard box that Schaidinger guided into the net for his first goal of the season.
Trailing 2-1, Carolina tied the match just 17 seconds into the second half thanks to McCarty's second goal of the season. After bringing the ball up the far sideline, Storey tapped fed sophomore Jamie Watson, who crossed the ball to McCarty at the opposite post. McCarty, who now leads the Tar Heels with six points on the season, then drilled a one-timer past Montero to knot the score at two at 45:17.
VCU quickly reclaimed the lead with Oduro's second goal of the match in the 50th minute of play. Following a Tar Heel foul, Okupu started the play with a free kick from 30 yards out, which he passed to Oduro. Odruo then fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box past a diving Williams for the go-ahead goal.
Oduro's third and fourth goals of the afternoon pushed the final margin to 5-2. He scored at both the 75:37 and 83:14 marks off assists Opuku.
VCU outshot the Tar Heels, 11-6. UNC managed just one shot in the first half, but the two teams each at five shots in the second frame.
Earlier Sunday, Wake Forest captured the tourney title with a 3-2 overtime win over Florida International in the day's first match. The Deacons' Scott Sealy scored twice on the afternoon and assisted on the game-winner. VCU placed second in the event, while FIU placed third and Carolina took fourth.
