UNC Races Duke In First Fall Action

BAHAMA, N.C. - In the first competition of the 2004-05 season, the North Carolina rowing team took on Duke Saturday morning and came away with one win in four races. A second varsity four made up of sophomore coxswain Regina Elwell, freshman Gretchen Klatte, sophomore Cleo Washington, freshman Lisy McIntee and freshman Lucy Barrios provided the day's highlight for Carolina, winning the third race of the morning in a time of 17:34.
"I'm excited they won their race, especially considering how young that boat is, " coach Sarah Haney said.
The other three races, in which UNC failed to place higher than third, demonstrated to Haney that her team has plenty of work to do. "Overall today, I think we learned that what we view as race intensity is not race intensity across the board and we really have to pick up what we're doing in practice to be competitive this year," Haney said. "We have a lot of youth on our team so it's really important we learn these lessons early. It's really more of a matter of what we do with the results today and what we learn from today."
The Tar Heels have two events remaining this fall. They'll row in the Head of the Hooch regatta in Gainesville, Ga., on Nov. 6 and in the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va., on Nov. 14.
