Virginia Routs Carolina In Men's Swimming & Diving

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. - Tenth-ranked Virginia won 12 of 13 events Saturday afternoon to score an easy 172-71 victory over No. 19 North Carolina in men's swimming and diving action. The sole event winner for the Tar Heels was freshman Ben Herboth, who took top honors in the three-meter diving competition.
Virginia remained undefeated on the season with an 8-0 record and a 3-0 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tar Heels fell to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the ACC.
Herboth was the top performer on the day for Carolina as the freshman from Charlotte, N.C. won the three-meter diving with a score of 329.62 points while Tar Heel sophomore Jon Fox finished second with 313.57 points.
UNC also did a good job on the one-meter diving board as UNC divers finished 2-3-4 in the event. Herboth was second with 291.45 points, followed by Fox in third place with 290.25 points and junior Ryan Matuszak in fourth place with 279.75 points.
On the swimming side, the Tar Heels did have a decent start to the meet as Carolina finished second and third in the 400-yard medley relay. Senior Eddy Matkovic, sophomore Aaron Burns, junior Josh Glasco and sophomore Casey Kott were second with a time of 3:21.70.
Glasco had a second place finish for the Tar Heels in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:47.09.
UNC will return to action against East Carolina Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heels will against swim against an ACC opponent when they host Maryland next Saturday at 11 a.m. at Koury Natatorium.
