Felton Named Hardee's Student-Athlete of the Week

Raymond Felton had 16 points and eight assists against just one turnover in Carolina's 110-76 win over Virginia and is the Hardee's Student-Athlete of the Week for January 24-30k, 2005. The Latta, S.C., junior had 13 points and six assists without a single turnover in the first half as the Tar Heels raced out to a 62-26 lead at intermission.

John Sands won two individual events and led the Tar Heels to four relay wins as Carolina's men's swimmers swept East Carolina and Maryland in dominant fashion. The freshman from Granville, Ohio won the 100-yard freestyle against the Pirates with his season-best time of 45.91 while anchoring the 200-yard medley relay to victory with a 20.22 freestyle split and swimming the second leg on the 200-yard freestyle relay. Against Maryland, Sands captured the 50-yard freestyle with a 20.73 time, just .02 off his season best. He had his splits of 19.87 in the 50 while anchoring the 200-yard medley relay to victory and 45.57 on the second leg of the Tar Heels' victorious 400-yard freestyle relay squad.

Junior Courtney Bumpers won her second all-around title of the season to lead the North Carolina gymnastics team to its first-ever win over West Virginia when competing at the West Virginia Coliseum. In their closest meet this season, the Tar Heels pulled ahead after being down by 0.5 points halfway through the meet to win 192.20-191.10. With a total of 39.20, umpers was the only gymnast to earn above a 39.0 in the all-around. She finished in the top three on every event and was the highest-scoring Tar Heel on each event. With first-place finishes on balance beam and floor exercise, she led Carolina to wins on its two most important events of the night. The reigning national floor exercise champion posted season-high scores on uneven bars and floor exercise, with a 9.75 on bars and a 9.85 on floor.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Latta led the Tar Heels to a win over top-ranked Duke last Monday with 13 points, five rebounds, three steals and 5-for-5 shooting from the foul line. The Tar Heels broke a 12-game losing streak against the Blue Devils and beat a top-ranked team for the first time in school history with Latta, the point guard, playing all 40 minutes and hitting key baskets at crucial times. For the week, she averaged 13.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists as the Tar Heels (17-3) also picked up wins against Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. On the season, she leads the Tar Heels in scoring, averaging 15.3 points per game.
