JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- South Carolina maintained its second round lead to claim the team championship at this year's Bank of Tennesee Intercollegiate held at the Ridges Golf and Country Club. The Gamecocks, led by second-place individual Florian Fritsch, finished the tournament with a score of five-under-par 859. After trailing South Carolina by only four strokes at the end of round two, the Tar Heels slipped in the rankings to finish in a tie for fifth place with a score of 876.
Rhyse Davies of Eastern Tennessee State won his seventh individual tournament championship at the his school's host event. He was one of two golfers, along with South Carolina's Florian Fritsch, to shoot all three rounds under par. Davies carded an 11-under score of 205 for the tournament to defeat Fritsch by three strokes.
Freshman Robert Riesen led the way for the Tar Heels with a fifth place finish. Riesen, a Pinehurst, N.C. native, shot a one-under 215 for the tournament. In the third round Riesen shot a three-under, 33, on the back nine. However, the difficult par-five eighth hole left him with a nine on his score card that contributed to a score of 75 in the round. Carolina junior Martin Ureta also finished in the top 20 with a score of 219. Freshman Chase MacFarland and seniors Jonathan Jackson and Ted Smith also contributed to the Tar Heels fifth place finish.
The North Carolina men's golf team returns to action on October 31 when they travel to San Martin, Calif. for the Corde Valle Intercollegiate.
