Chapel Hill, N.C. - After falling in the season's first meet against the University of Georgia, the women's swimming and diving team hoped to get back on the right track with a pair of meets this weekend. The women got off to a strong start with an excellent performance in the Tar Heel Invitation Friday and then used that momentum to even their dual meet record at 1-1 with a 173-122 victory over Richmond on Saturday.
Carolina's stellar freshman class helped to lead the way against the Spiders claiming four first place finishes in the meet's 12 individual swimming events. Whitney Sprague out-touched fellow freshman Nicole O'Donnell to win the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:57.03. Freshman Hannah Mein then took the 200-yard butterfly victory and was followed up by freshman Aubrette Biegel who won the meet's very next event, the 50-yard freestyle. Sarah Scott finished off the freshman class's fabulous afternoon with a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly. Overall the freshman class accounted for 57 of the Tar Heels' points.
The Tar Heels also boasted five other individual event winners on the day. Senior Amanda Smith won the 200-yard freestyle and juniors Marissa Nilon and Mary Margaret Gamblin won the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard backstroke, respectively. Carolina swept the diving events with senior captain gia Santoro claiming the three-meter prize and senior Kate Lewis outscoring the field on the one-meter board. Lewis, a native of Doylestown, Pa., took home her second first-place finish of the season, adding the win to her victory on the three-meter board against Georgia.
For Richmond, it was a banner day for junior Lauren Boudreau, who finished in first place in three separate individual events. Boudreau was the fastest swimmer in 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard breaststroke, and 200-yard individual medley. Emily Bateman and Jessica Witt also joined Boudreau with meet victories in the 100-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle.
The two teams split the relays with the Tar Heels claiming the meet's first event, the 200-yard medley relay and the Spiders closing out the meet with a victory in the 400-yard free relay.
The Tar Heels next compete against the University of Minnesota and the University of North Dakota in a two-day event November 4-5 in Minneapolis, Minn.
