North Carolina Knocks Off Duke In Swimming & Diving

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The University of North Carolina men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in their first Atlantic Coast Conference dual meets of the season with the No. 22-ranked UNC men defeating Duke 208-86 and the No. 22-ranked Tar Heel women garnering a 190-106 triumph over Duke at Koury Natatorium. Six different UNC swimmers and divers each won two individual events in the meet as Carolina's women won 13 of 16 events overall and the men took top honors in 14 of 16 events.
The Tar Heel men improved their record to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the ACC while the North Carolina women upped their mark to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the ACC. Duke's women are 4-3 and 1-3 in the ACC and the Blue Devils' men's team is now 2-3, 1-2 in ACC meets.
On the women's side senior Amanda Smith, junior Meagan Eickman and sophomore Lindsey Marck each won two individual events. Smith won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles, Eickman took the 100-yard backstroke and freestyle and Marck took first place in the 50-yard freestyle and 200-yard individual medley. Eickman and Marck also swam on the UNC winning 200-yard medley and 200-yard freestyle relay teams.
The men were led by senior Chad Ames and sophomores Ryan Funderburk, Rob Swendiman and Philip Owen who each captured a pair of individual wins. Funderburk won both diving events, Swendiman place No. 1 in the two sprint freestyle races and Owen was the top finisher in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles. Ames swept the two butterfly races. Swendiman also swam a leg on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team.
North Carolina gained one point for each victory in the 2005-06 Carlyle Cup standings which is an all-sports award in which Duke and UNC compete head-to-head in 25 sports to determine an annual Cup champion. The award is sponsored by Carlyle & Company. Duke now leads the 2005-06 race 4.5 points to 3.5 points.
The Tar Heels will host the Nike Cup Swimming & Diving Championships at Koury Natatorium November 17-19.
