Senior Jarwarski Pollock caught a season-high six passes for 74 yards and in the process broke the Carolina record for career receptions held by Na Brown, who caught 165 passes from 1995-98. Pollock tied the mark on a 10-yard pass play from Matt Baker in the second quarter and later set the record with a five-yard grab in the third quarter. Pollock now has 169 career catches.
Carolina's 30 points marked its most since scoring 31 in the Oct. 1 win over Utah.
Saturday's game was Carolina's first overtime contest since Sept. 6, 2003, versus Syracuse. Carolina lost that game, 49-47, in three overtimes.
Maryland gained 524 yards of total offense on Saturday, the most Carolina has allowed since allowing 475 to Georgia Tech in the 2005 season opener on Sept. 10.
Junior free safety Kareen Taylor returned a fourth-quarter interception 25 yards for a touchdown. Taylor now has two career interceptions - both returned for touchdowns. He brought one back 64 yards in the win at Duke in 2004.
Sophomore Kyndraus Guy made his first career interception in the second quarter, returning the ball 37 yards to the Maryland six-yard line. The Tar Heels scored on the next play on a Ronnie McGill six-yard touchdown run that gave UNC a 10-7 lead. McGill leads Carolina with four touchdowns this season.
Junior Jesse Holley had six catches for 115 yards for his fifth straight game of at least four receptions, third straight game with at least six catches and second straight 100-yard effort. Holley's 49-yard catch-and-run in the third quarter was the Tar Heels' second-longest pass play of the season and longest since the season-opener at Georgia Tech.
Junior Mike Mason had three catches for 72 yards and his first touchdown of the season. Mason had combined for just three catches for eight yards in the previous three games, but the 72 yards marked the most for Mason since he posted 82 yards versus Utah on Oct. 1.
Senior quarterback Matt Baker was 25-for-40 for 335 yards and one touchdown to set career highs for yards, attempts and completions. It was his second straight 200-yard passing effort and sixth of the season.
Matt Baker's 21-yard run to the Maryland seven yard line on a quarterback draw with 24 seconds left in the fourth quarter was the longest of his career and UNC's longest of the day.
Carolina kicker Conner Barth connected on a season-long 45-yard field goal in the first quarter and tacked on a 41-yard make as time expired in the first half. Barth hit another field goal with nine seconds left to tie the score at 30-30 and force overtime. Prior to missing a 38-yard attempt in overtime, he had made six straight kicks after opening the year 3-for-11. Barth is 9-for-18 on field goal attempts this season.
Senior defensive lineman Chase Page had two third quarter sacks of Sam Hollenbach, giving him three this season.
Sophomore Kentwan Balmer made his first career start at defensive end and had three quarterback hurries.
