CHAPEL HILL --- The University of North Carolina softball team signed five student-athletes to National Letters of Intent, head coach Donna J. Papa announced Monday. This group will begin school in the fall of 2006 and play their first season in the spring of 2007.
The signees are Ciara Rimoldi of Roswell, Ga., Stephanie Murad of Greenville, N.C., Samantha Ingersoll of Ashburn, Va., Danielle Spaulding of Fontana, Calif., and Anna Roberts of Greenville, N.C.
"I am extremely excited about the quality of players in our recently signed 2006 class," Papa said. "In addition to being very athletic and versatile, their attitudes, work ethics and personalities make them outstanding additions to our roster. I know that they will have a significant impact on our future successes. We have taken steps to solidify our defense, improve team speed and continue to add power to our lineup."
Rimoldi is an infielder from Marist High School and was recently named Dekalb County Player of the Year. "Ciara is an extremely athletic player who will add versatility to our defense," Papa said. "She will give us power offensively from the right side."
Murad is an infielder from J.H. Rose High School. "`Sam' will give us home run power at the plate," Papa said. "She has played mainly at shortstop but will give us added depth on the left side of the infield."
Ingersoll is an infielder from Stone Bridge High School. "Samantha is a gifted athlete with an above-average arm and range to the ball," Papa said. "She will be an offensive threat."
Spaulding is a first baseman/pitcher from Etiwanda High School. "Danielle is a threat at the plate giving us power from the left side," Papa said. "She will be a great addition to our pitching staff as well as being a solid defensive first baseman."
Roberts is an outfielder from Arendell Parrott Academy. "Anna brings speed and versatility to our team," Papa said. "She will strengthen our outfield and will be a force at the plate."
