Junior Courtney Bumpers earned her sixth career East Atlantic Gymnastics League Gymnast of the Week title for the week of Jan. 25-Feb. 1, the EAGL announced Tuesday. It was Bumpers' first honor this year but the second Tar Heel accolade in back-to-back weeks. Senior Elisabeth Alsop notched her first weekly honor last week when she was named the EAGL Specialist of the Week.
The 2004 EAGL Gymnast of the Year won her second 2005 all-around title Saturday to lead the Tar Heels to its first win over West Virginia when the Mountaineers competed at home. Carolina began the meet down after the first two rotations, but Bumpers won balance beam and tied for first on floor exercise to stage a Carolina comeback in its final two events.
Bumpers was the top Carolina performer on every event, and she set season-high scores on uneven bars ( 9.75), floor exercise (9.85) and all-around (39.20). She complemented her three first-place finishes with a runner-up performance on vault and third place on bars.
Bumpers and the Tar Heels will return to action when they host the annual Governor's Cup in their home opener Saturday at 2 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
