Carolina Breezes Past Virginia Wesleyan, 22-5

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior attackmen Mike McCall and Jed Prossner tallied four and three goals, respectively, and 15 different Tar Heel players scored goals as the No. 5-ranked North Carolina men's lacrosse team ran past Virginia Wesleyan 22-5 at Henry Stadium Saturday afternoon in Carolina's final exhibition match of the 2005 season. Junior Dave Werry won 18 of 23 faceoffs and claimed 15 ground balls to spark the Tar Heels who open the regular season February 26 against the University of Denver at Fetzer Field at 1 p.m.
UNC sped to an 11-0 lead after the first quarter against the Marlins as junior attackman Ryan Blair figured in five of the Tar Heel tallies, scoring the opening goal of the game at 14:17 and then assisting on four Carolina goals later in the first quarter. McCall had two of his four goals in the first quarter, including the score that gave the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead, and Prossner had two of his three goals to go with one assist in the opening 15 minutes.
Fueled by Werry's faceoff efforts that led the Tar Heels to a team advantage of 25-6 at the X, UNC kept control of the ball virtually the entire quarter. Carolina outshot the Marlins 21-2 in the first quarter and 62-19 for the match. Senior midfielder Lance Zimmerman's goal with 7:37 left in the first quarter had Carolina ahead 7-0 less than halfway through the opening period.
The Marlins fought back in the second quarter to outscore the Tar Heels 3-2 and cut Carolina's lead at halftime to 13-3. On the day, both Cameron McKay and Dan Hofmeister finished with two goals for Virginia Wesleyan.
UNC rebounded to dominate the third quarter, outscoring the Marlins 7-1 while running up a 20-4 shot advantage.
Junior attackman Sean Link and senior midfielder Bryant Will were also multiple goal scorers for Carolina with two each. Junior midfielder Kyle Henderson, freshman attackman Michael Burns and freshman midfielder Ryan Walterhoefer each had a goal and an assist for UNC.
Paul Spellman and Trey Sheain each played one half in goal for Carolina. Troy Sothoron netminded the opening 53:41 for the Marlins and was credited with all 15 saves for VWC.
UNC finished with a dominating 62-21 ground ball edge. The Tar Heels were successful on all 22 of their clears but the one negative in their game was their ball handling as they committed 21 turnovers, six more than the Marlins. The Tar Heel ride was effective in forcing 11 failed clears by Virginia Wesleyan.
