May Named Hardee's Student-Athlete Of The Week

Sean May averaged 19.5 points and 15.5 rebounds in a pair of games against nationally ranked opponents and is the Hardee's Student-Athlete of the Week for February 7-13, 2005. May led all players on both teams in the one-point loss at Duke with 23 points and 18 rebounds. He was also Carolina's defensive player of the game at Duke as he helped limit Duke center Shelden Williams to just three of six field goals. The Bloomington, Ind., junior had 16 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in the 77-70 win at Connecticut. May posted back-to-back double-doubles for the first time this year and both were on the road against ranked opponents. He shot 13 for 25 from the floor in the two games (52 percent) and was 13 for 15 from the free throw line.
WRESTLING
Drew Forshey
Sophomore, 125 pounds
Hickory, N.C.
Wrestling for an injured Bobby Shaw, Forshey went 2-1 at 125 pounds on the weekend to improve his season mark to 15-7. After dropping his first bout of the weekend against Virginia Tech, he posted a 9-3 decision over No. 17 Luke Smith in the Tar Heels' loss to Central Michigan and followed that up with a 19-2 technical fall win over The Citadel's Andrew McDonald. Forshey is now 2-2 in dual matches this season.
TRACK & FIELD
Vikas Gowda
Senior, Frederick, Md.
Gowda won his first shot put competition of the season, taking top honors in the event at the Virginia Tech Challenge in Blacksburg, Va. His mark of 62 feet, 4 1/2 inches was good to automatically qualify him for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
SOFTBALL

Santa Clarita, Calif.
Holden hit .583 with seven RBIs over five games this weekend to lead the Tar Heels to a 5-0 record in the Triangle Classic. Holden had five doubles and knocked in the game-tying runs in Sunday's 3-2 win over Virginia.
MEN'S TENNIS
Derek Porter

UNC junior Derek Porter scored a pair of straight set victories to lead the North Carolina men's tennis team to a pair of victories over nationally-ranked teams last week as Carolina defeated South Carolina 5-2 and Purdue 7-0. The wins ran UNC's winning streak to four in a row and raised Carolina's record to 6-2. Porter dominated the Gamecocks' Dmitry abenko 6-0, 6-0 and was the first player off the court in singles in the regional win over USC. Porter then came back and recorded his 40th career singles win with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Purdue's Filip Koziell. Porter is now 6-1 this year in dual-match singles play and 11-4 overall in singles play including fall tournament play.
MEN'S LACROSSE
Dave Werry

Carolina junior midfielder Dave Werry dominated the faceoff X as the North Carolina Tar Heels defeated Virginia Wesleyan 22-5 in UNC final exhibition game of the 2005 season February 12. The Ontario native won 18 of 23 faceoffs against the Marlins and scooped up an amazing 15 ground balls. Werry capped his day by playing some offense, scoring a fourth quarter goal as well.
