ATLANTA, GA. - North Carolina's men's swimming and diving team clung to third place by the narrowest of margins after Friday night's session of the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. Freshman Ben Herboth had the top individual finish for the Tar Heels on Friday as he took fifth place in three-meter diving.
Carolina's other championship finalists on Friday included juniors Jon Vassen and Josh Glasco, who placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 100-yard butterfly, and sophomore Jon Fox, who copped seventh in three-meter diving.
Sophomore Aaron Burns placed ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke and senior Jimmy Owens was 10th in the 100-yard backstroke.
Carolina's 400-yard medley relay of senior Jimmy Owens, sophomore Aaron Burns, junior Josh Glasco and sophomore Casey Kott took fifth place.
Virginia maintains its lead heading into the final day of competition. The Cavaliers have scored 502.5 after 14 events, leading Florida State (383), North Carolina (300.5), Georgia Tech (300), Clemson (248.5), Virginia Tech (227.5), NC State (220), Maryland (172), Duke (103) and Miami (73). The Tar Heels led the homestanding Yellow Jackets by 22.5 points after Thursday's second day of competition in the meet. But the Jackets skimmed 22 points off UNC's margin in the fight for third place on Friday in the first time Georgia Tech has ever hosted the ACC Championships.
Things actually looked like they would be even more dire for the Tar Heels after the morning session after Georgia Tech placed nine swimmers and divers into Friday night's championship finals while UNC could manage only four championship finalists.
With Virginia safely in front and Florida State having solidly wrapped up second place the battle Saturday will be for third place between Carolina and Georgia Tech and for the fifth through seventh spots amongst Clemson, Virginia Tech and NC State.
