Carolina's 95-71 win over NC State Thursday marked the Tar Heels' largest victory in the series since a 73-46 win March 6, 1998 at the ACC Tournament in Greensboro. UNC (18-2, 7-1 ACC) also scored its most points versus the Pack since scoring 96 on Jan. 4, 1996. The Tar Heels have now won their last 14 games at the Smith Center.
The 95 points scored by the Tar Heels were the most allowed the NC State this season. Duke scored 86 versus State on January 13. Carolina's 51 first-half points were also the most allowed by the Wolfpack in a first half this season. The previous high was 41 scored by Clemson in State's last outing.
With a lay-up at the 15:58 mark of the first half, junior Raymond Felton reached 1,000 points in his Tar Heel career. Carolina leads the nation with 56 1,000-point scorers. Felton finished with 11 points versus the Wolfpack and now has 1,009 for his career. He also had 10 assists on the night to pass Jeff Lebo on the all-time UNC list and now sits sixth with 589 total. Felton is now one of five Tar Heels with 1,000 points and 500 assists in a career. Ed Cota was the last UNC player to record this feat.
Felton's 10 assists marked his 15th career double-digit assist game, which ranks third in Tar Heel history. He needs just one more to tie Phil Ford for second on the list. With 11 points and 10 assists, Felton recorded his third double-double of the season and 10th of his career.
Junior Sean May joined Felton in a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds. He now has four double-doubles on the year 19th of his career. May has three double-doubles in the last six games and is averaging 14.2 points and 11.3 rebounds over this stretch.
With double-doubles by Felton and May, the Tar Heels had two players with double-doubles for the first time since May and Felton did so on Feb. 21, 2004 versus Florida State.
With 18 points, junior Rashad McCants eclipsed the 1,500-point plateau at Carolina, becoming just the 23rd player in program history to do so. He was 5 of 6 from the field and added five assists, three steals and two blocks versus NC State. McCants now has 20 assists over the last four games.
Freshman Marvin Williams scored a career-best 20 points on 5 of 8 shooting, including a 3 of 4 effort from behind the arc. He hit his first three three-point attempts giving him six consecutive makes. Williams was 3 of 3 from behind the arc at Virginia and is averaging 17.5 points over the last two outings. He was 7 of 8 from the line and is now 79 of 91 (86.8 percent) on the season.
Junior David Noel tied a career high with four steals in the first half. He finished with six points and four steals on the night.
With six points versus NC State, senior Jawad Williams failed to reach double figures for the first time this season and first time in 21 games. He did have six rebounds and was 2 of 2 from the foul line and has made 26 of his last 28 free throw attempts.
Carolina held NC State to 39.1 percent shooting. The Tar Heels have now held 16 straight opponents to under 44 percent from the field.
