COLLEGE PARK, MD. - Fourth-ranked Maryland received a 20-save performance from Harry Alford as the Terrapins defeated 19th-ranked North Carolina 9-4 before 1,823 fans at Byrd Stadium Saturday afternoon. Alford's performance was key for the Terps as UNC outshot the Tar Heels 40-28 but Alford kept the Carolina offense at bay, making 12 of his saves in the third quarter alone as the Tar Heels tried to mount a comeback.
UNC dropped to 2-5 with the loss and 0-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference while the Terrapins improved to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the ACC.
Offensively, the Tar Heels were led by Ryan Blair who scored two goals. Jed Prossner and freshman midfielder Rob Driscoll had the other goals for Carolina which will play at home next Saturday against undefeated and No. 1-ranked Johns Hopkins at Fetzer Field. Faceoff time is 1 p.m.
Maryland was led by Brendan Healy, Joe Walters and Michael Phipps who each scored two goals for the Terrapins. Michael Hartofilis had a goal and three assists for Maryland.
Paul Spellman had a fine effort in goal for UNC with 10 saves but it was not enough to pull out the victory for Carolina.
Maryland led 3-0 on goals by Healey, Phipps and Walters before Carolina got on the board with five minutes left in the first half on a fast-break goal by Blair, assisted by junior defenseman Stephen McElduff.
When Prossner scored just 1:41 into the third quarter, UNC was within 3-2 but Maryland scored the next two goals of the third quarter to stretch the lead to 5-2.
Carolina again got back in the game on back-to-back goals by Ryan Blair and Rob Driscoll in the first 2:04 of the final period but that is as close as UNC would get. Maryland went on a four-goal scoring run in a span of 4:03 with four different Terrapin players recording goals to eventually stretch out the final margin to 9-4.
