No. 2-ranked North Carolina improved to 26-3 overall, 14-2 in the ACC and 15-0 at the Smith Center with Sunday's 75-73 victory over Duke at the Smith Center. The win was the first for the Tar Heels in the series since an 82-79 victory in Chapel Hill on March 9, 2003.
With the win, Carolina clinched its 15th outright ACC regular season title and first since the 1992-93 season. The Tar Heels will also be the No. 1 seed in next weekend's ACC Tournament in Washington, D.C., for the 19th time and first since 2000-01.
With a 15-0 mark at home this season, Carolina went unbeaten at the Smith Center for the first time since the 1992-93 season.
The Tar Heels rallied for the win with an 11-0 run over the final 2:40. Marvin Williams' follow-up three-point play off a Raymond Felton missed free throw with 17 seconds left proved to the game winner. Duke's last basket came at 3:07.
Junior Sean May scored 26 points and grabbed a career-best 24 rebounds, including 12 offensive boards, for his eighth straight double-double. He is the first Tar Heel to record eight double-doubles in a row since Mitch Kupchak in 1975-76. He now has 13 double-doubles this season and 28 in his career. With 32 points in Wednesday's win over Florida State, May has combined to score 58 points over the last two games.
May was at his best versus the Blue Devils this season. With 23 points and 18 boards in the first meeting and 26 points and 24 rebounds in the Sunday's meeting, May averaged 24.5 points and 21.0 rebounds in the two games this year. Two of May's three career 20-plus rebounding efforts have come against Duke.
Senior Jackie Manuel scored 12 points on Senior Day for his first double-figure game since the home win over Miami. He was 5 of 6 from the field against Duke.
Led by May's career-best effort, Carolina outrebounded the Blue Devils, 48-30. Freshman Marvin Williams added seven rebounds for the Tar Heels.
Carolina made just 1 of 11 from three-point range and shot just 40.3 percent from the field for its lowest mark since the win at Florida State. Duke made 11 threes on the night and 46.4 of its shots.
The Tar Heels had a 10-point advantage at the free throw line, as they shot 20 of 26 compared to a 10 of 19 effort for Duke.
After Duke's J.J. Redick scored 17 first-half points, the Tar Heels held him scoreless in the final 20 minutes.
Senior walk-ons Charlie Everett and C.J. Hooker made their first career starts. Junior Raymond Felton, who had 11 points and six assists, did not start for the first time in his career. He had started all 92 games in which he played, a Tar Heel record for consecutive starts.
