CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- North Carolina student-athletes, coaches and athletics staff members gathered Monday evening to celebrate the 2004-05 school year at the department's annual All-Sports Banquet. At the Dean E. Smith Center, a crowd of about 750 cheered the winners of national, Atlantic Coast Conference, University and department awards and enjoyed a video that chronicled the seasons of each of the Tar Heels' teams.
"We ask a lot of all of our student-athletes, but this evening gives us the chance to recognize some who have achieved at the highest levels athletically, academically and in the Carolina community," UNC director of athletics Dick Baddour said. "As we prepare to wrap up the school year, it's a great celebration for all 28 of our teams. We're so proud of the way they represent the University of North Carolina."
Field hockey player Carey Fetting-Smith and football player Jason Brown received the Mildred McCaskill Award, which goes to one male and one female student-athlete who have excelled in academics, athletics, leadership and community service.
The John Lotz Award went to women's tennis player Kendall Cline. The second-year honor, named in honor of the former UNC men's basketball assistant coach and assistant athletic director, recognizes a student-athlete who has demonstrated a passion to succeed under adverse circumstances, overcoming difficulties while maintaining a positive attitude. The award was presented by Lotz's wife, Vicki Lotz.
Allyson Criner (track and field), Doug Justice (football), Heather O'Reilly (women's soccer), Katy Tran (field hockey), Dave Werry (men's lacrosse) and Katie Wright (volleyball) received the ACC Top Six for Service Award. The award recognizes six student-athletes from each ACC school who demonstrate dedication to community service and outreach programs.
