Carolina's Men's Golf Team Finishes 14th At NCAA East Regional

Kingston Springs, Tenn. - The University of North Carolina men's golf team finished in 14th place with an 860 total at the NCAA East Regional. The Tar Heels fired a two-over-par 286 in the final round, but missed the cut to the NCAA Championship as only the top 10 teams advance. However, Tar Heel sophomore Martin Ureta tied for eighth place with a seven-under 206 total and was one of two individuals to advance on to the NCAA Championship.
Wake Forest topped the field of 27 teams posting a 17-under 835 total after firing a three-under 281 in the final round. Tennessee was the runner up finishing two strokes back with an 837 total. Georgia finished in third place with an 843 total while Florida and Georgia State tied for fourth place with 845 totals. The other teams finishing in the top 10 and thus advancing on to the NCAA Championship are Alabama, Georgia Tech, Coastal Carolina, Duke and Georgia Southern.
Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina captured the individual championship after firing a seven-under 64 in the final round for a 15-under 198 total. Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State was the runner-up just one stroke back with a 199 total and was the other individual advancing on to the NCAA Championship. Florida's Matt Every and Wake Forest's Sean Moore tied for third place with 203 totals while Michael Schachner of Duke finished fifth at 204, Tennessee's Ross McGowan and Georgia's Brendon Todd tied for sixth place with 205 totals and Carolina's Martin Ureta and Tennessee's John Scott Rattan tied for eighth place with 206 totals.
Ureta fired a three-under 68 in the final round to lead the Tar Heels with a seven-under 206 total. Jonathan Jackson fired a four-under 67 on the last day to finish with a 215 total and a tie for 43rd place. Kevin Silva tied for 58th place with a 217 total while Ted Smith tied for 82nd with a 222 total and Doug Kingston tallied a 230 total to tie for 118th place.
The 54-hole event was played at The Golf Club of Tennessee which features a par 71, 6,864-yard layout. The NCAA Championship will be played May 31-June 3 in Baltimore, Md.
