The Tar Heels and Seminoles went to extra innings for their third straight meeting in ACC Tournament play. Carolina won in 10 innings in 2003, while FSU won in 11 last year. The Tar Heels are 1-6 all-time against the Noles in the league tourney.
Carolina will face either Georgia Tech or Wake Forest in an elimination game at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The Tar Heels were a combined 5-1 versus the Yellow Jackets and Demon Deacons this season. Sophomore left-hander Andrew Miller will get the start for Carolina.
UNC has suffered three straight walk-off losses to the Seminoles, two in Tallahassee earlier this month and the 3-2, 12-inning defeat Wednesday.
Wednesday's loss marked the Tar Heels' 20th one-run game of the season. They are now 12-8 in these games, with three of these losses coming to FSU. Since the NC State series, five of Carolina's last eight losses have been by one run.
Florida State has now won five straight in the series, including three extra-inning, one-run games.
After allowing a first inning single, Carolina starter Robert Woodard did not allow give up another base hit until Josh Spivey's fifth inning double. Between hits, he retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced. FSU's Shane Robinson reached on an error in the third for the only Seminole base runner over this stretch. Woodard equaled a career-best with seven strikeouts and did not allow an earned run over six-plus innings. He walked two and scattered six hits.
Reliever Jonathan Hovis established a career-best with six strikeouts over just 2.1 innings.
Senior center fielder Chase Younts tied a season-best with three hits.
With his first inning double, designated hitter Matt Ellington has hit safely in 11 of the last 12 games.
Senior second baseman Greg Mangum had two hits and now has six hits over the last four games since returning from hamstring injury.
