With the 5-1 win over Notre Dame Friday, North Carolina improved to 47-42 all-time in NCAA tournament play. Head coach Mike Fox is now 12-10 in six postseason appearances with the Tar Heels, who have won six straight NCAA tournament openers dating back to 1999. Carolina has also won six straight postseason games against neutral opponents, including victories over Coastal Carolina and The Citadel at the 2004 Columbia Regional.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for the Tar Heels, who scored more than two runs for the first time since the May 20 win over Georgia Tech. The four-run margin of victory was the largest for Carolina since a 13-5 victory over Winthrop on May 10.
Friday's game marked the Tar Heels' 30th of the season against teams that qualified for the 2005 NCAA tournament. They are 14-15-1 in these contests. Carolina has played 15 different teams that qualified for the tourney, and with Saturday's meeting against either Florida or Stetson, the Tar Heels will have faced exactly 25 percent of the tournament field (16 of 64 teams).
Following Robert Woodard's complete-game, six-hitter Friday, Carolina pitching has allowed just three earned runs over its last 28 innings of work for a 0.96 ERA since the end of the regular season. The Tar Heels have stuck out 23 batters and walked just eight over this stretch. Woodard has worked 15 of these innings, surrendering just one earned run.
Woodard is now 16-2 in his career for a .889 winning percentage, which ties Scott Bankhead for the best mark in Carolina history. The former All-America was 24-3 from 1982-84.
With two hits Friday, designated hitter Matt Ellington has hit safely in 13 of the last 14 games and has a team-best 23 multi-hit games.
After two hits Friday, senior outfielder Chase Younts has had at least two hits in each of the last three games. He is 7-for-11 since the end of the regular season and now has six career NCAA tournament hits.
Freshman infielder Chad Flack snapped a 0-for-9 streak with a 3-for-4 effort Friday. The three hits equaled a career high, and he now has five three-hit games this season. With two RBI from Flack and one from classmate Josh Horton, Tar Heel rookies have accounted for 153 of the team's 359 RBI this season. Flack needs just three more RBI for 50 on the season and he is second on the squad with 13 multi-RBI outings.
Senior second baseman Greg Mangum hit his first home run of the season and just the fifth of his career Friday. Two of his homers have come in NCAA play, including a grand slam in the Starkville Regional in 2003. Mangum now has 16 hits in 15 career postseason games. He needs just two more hits to move into a tie for eighth in Carolina history and two more runs to move into a tie for 10th.
