White, Owens and King Advance On NCAA Day One

University of North Carolina throwers Jocelyn White and Nick Owens each used personal best marks to advance to the finals in their respective events on day one of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif. White qualified sixth in the women's discus with a throw of 172 feet. Owens had the second-best mark in the men's hammer throw, a school record effort of 218-4.
On the track, Cassie King was the only Tar Heel to advance to a final, moving on in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase. Her time of 10:08.70 was good for third in her heat and sixth overall. The time was a personal best for King, the second-fastest Tar Heel woman ever in the steeplechase.
Four other Tar Heels were in action on Wednesday but did not advance. Georgia Kloss and Danielle Rodgers were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the their heats of the women's 800-meter run. Noah Cosby cleared 16-4 3/4 in the men's pole vault, but was unable to clear the height of 16-10 3/4 necessary to move on. In the women's steeplechase, Anna Hay was 13th in her heat in 10:24.75.
White, Owens and King will compete again on Friday in the finals of their respective events. Thursday's action will feature Vikas Gowda in the men's discus, Tatyana Kirichenko in the women's pole vault, Sheena Gordon in the high jump and Erin Donohue in the women's 1500-meter run.
