CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs purchased the contract of former North Carolina All-America Adam Greenberg from Double-A West Tenn Thursday, making him the sixth Tar Heel to earn a spot on a major league roster this season.
Greenberg, who starred at Carolina from 2000-02, was batting .275 at West Tenn with four homers, seven triples, nine doubles and 27 RBI. He has played 63 games in right field, 10 in center and one in left. Greenberg was drafted by the Cubs in the ninth round of the 2002 draft. He was called up with former Georgia Tech outfielder Matt Murton.
While in Chapel Hill, Greenberg hit .324 in 182 career games. He is the Tar Heels' career leader with 17 triples and also totaled 27 home runs and 126 RBI. Greenberg earned third-team All-America honors as a junior after hitting .337 with 17 homers and 57 RBI.
Greenberg joins former UNC teammate Russ Adams (Toronto) in the majors. Fellow Tar Heels Brian Roberts and B.J. Surhoff are teammates with the Baltimore Orioles, while pitcher Kyle Snyder (Kansas City) and outfielder Tyrell Godwin (Washington) have also seen time in the big leagues this season.
