The North Carolina gymnastics team will host Kentucky, Maryland, and James Madison in its second home meet Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Carmichael Auditorium. The Tar Heels enter the meet with an undefeated record of 6-0 after placing first at the George Washington Invitational and beating William & Mary at home.
Carolina will face James Madison for the second time this season, having defeated the Dukes on Jan. 12 at the George Washington Invitational. At the Invitational, the Tar Heels finished first with a score of 192.475, while James Madison with a score of 184.150 placed fourth. This will be the first contest of the season against Kentucky and EAGL opponent Maryland.
The University of Kentucky gymnastics squad enters with a perfect record of 4-0. Most recently, the Wildcats won their first SEC dual meet victory in over four years against Auburn.
Fellow EAGL opponent Maryland comes into Sunday's meet 1-2 on the season after falling to Illinois and defending NCAA National Champions Georgia. Maryland's only win came against James Madison on Jan. 7 in its season opener, 189.300 to 177.750. The Terps swept the Dukes on all four events.
James Madison, in addition to its season opening loss at Maryland and fourth place finish at the George Washington Invitational, most recently fell to Rutgers (189.825-181.00) on Jan. 21.
Carolina took last weekend off for the first time since the season began on Jan. 12. The Tar Heels are coming off a dominating win against William & Mary in Chapel Hill on Jan. 19. Carolina won the meet 191.425-184.350, sweeping the top three spots on floor exercise, balance beam, and on vault and had four of the top five spots on uneven bars.
Junior Christine Robella led Carolina with her second all-around title of the season, scoring a 39.125. She recorded a win on uneven bars and the balance beam, and finished second on floor exercise and vault.
Senior Courtney Bumpers, who finished second in the all-around, looked especially strong on floor exercise, finishing first with a season-high score of 9.900.
