CHAPEL HILL --- Senior Laura Gerraughty won the women's shot put with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark and senior Sheena Gordon provisionally qualified in two events Saturday afternoon at the UNC Fast Times meet at the Eddie Smith Field House. Senior Vikas Gowda also provisionally qualified in the men's shot put.
Gerraughty, competing in the shot put for the first time in over a year, won the event with a mark of 59 feet, 5 1/2 inches (18.12 meters), the top mark in America so far in 2006. The Nashua, N.H., native was limited to only the weight throw last indoor season and redshirted the outdoor season after injuring her wrist. Gerraughty was the 2004 NCAA champion in the shot put both indoors and outdoors.
Gordon won the women's triple jump with a leap of 43-0 1/4 (13.11m). The Erie, Pa., native was also second in the high jump with a top mark of 5-10 (1.78m). She just missed clearing 6-0 1/2, the automatic qualifying mark, on her final two attempts.
Gowda was second in the men's shot put with a provisional mark of 59-7 1/2 (18.17m). Gowda, a native of Frederick, Md., owns both the school and ACC meet records in the event, and moved into the top 10 in the country in the event.
Carolina also had several other individual event winners. Sophomore Tyra Johnson won the women's 200 in 25.31. Sophomore Reggie Berry won the men's 200 in a personal best 21.73. Senior Pablo Durana won the men's mile run in 4:12.99.
UNC stays home again next weekend with the Carolina Invitational. Action is set to begin Saturday at 10 a.m.
