JONESBOROUGH, TENN.- The University of North Carolina men's golf team shot a three-over-par 291 on the final day of the Bank of Tennessee at The Ridges Golf Tournament to take home their third straight top-three finish. Carolina entered the final round in second place just behind East Tennessee State and they finished the day in a similar position right behind ETSU, but also behind Tennessee who carded a three-under 285 to win the championship. Alabama, who posted the tournament's lowest round Sunday with a seven-under 281, took fourth while Wake Forest rounded out the top five.
Sophomore Robert Riesen followed up his two opening round 73s with a two-under 70 on Sunday to move up from a tie for 10th into a tie for 5th. The Pinehurst native was stready throughout the round bogeying just one hole, the ninth. The 9th hole was Riesen's nemesis all weekend as he played the rest of the golf course at five-under par. The top-five finish was his second in three tournaments and coincidentally the same position he finished at last year's Bank of Tennessee.
Senior Reed Darsie and junior Barden Berry were also amongst the top 15 golfers equalling each other's score at four-over 220 in a tie for 13th. Darsie was primed for a top eight finish before bogeying each of the last three holes. Sophomore David Holzworth also played well on Sunday shooting a 74 to wind up in a tie for 21st. Senior Martin Ureta rounded out the Tar Heel squad in a tie for 33rd place after shooting a 75 Sunday.
Defending champ Rhys Davies lapped the field again Sunday to win his second straight Bank of Tennessee medal by three strokes. Davies shot a five-under 211 and was the only player in the field under par in each of his three rounds. Tennessee's Philip Pettitt was Davies closest competitor at two-under par while South Carolina's George Bryan IV and Tennessee's Charles Ford were the only other golfers in red figures at one-under. Alabama's Gator Todd, along with Riesen, rounded out the top five at even par.
The Tar Heels get a week off before returning to action in the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitation on October 22 in Windermere, Florida.
