CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Members of the North Carolina rowing team raced Sunday at the world's largest regatta, the Head of the Charles. The Tar Heel varsity eight finished 40th in the championship eights race and two UNC assistant coaches fared well in singles racing.
At the 42nd Head of the Charles Regatta, UNC finished the Charles River course in a time of 17:34.8, good for 40th in the field of 45. A U.S. Rowing eight won the race in 15:36.7 and Princeton was the fastest collegiate squad with a third-place time of 16:13.1. Other Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the race were Duke (16th), Clemson (21st) and Boston College (30th).
"We felt like we had a really good race," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "The time we posted today would have put us much higher last year, but we felt like we started off strong today and beat some good teams. We're not happy with being 40th, but we do feel positive about how the race went."
The lineup for the Tar Heel boat was freshman coxswain Vashti Chandler, junior Lisy McIntee, freshman Megan McMullin, senior Adriann Spinks, junior Maegan Wareham, sophomore Mary Sasson, senior Christin Cotten, senior Megan Mitzel and senior Laura Rock.
Tar Heel assistant coach Stephen Arthur-Wong finished sixth in a field of 33 in the men's lightweight singles in a time of 18:44.8. UNC alum Michelle Hall, who is from Chapel Hill and now serves as a volunteer assistant coach for the team, finished 15th in a field of 29 in the women's lightweight singles in 21:36.2.
Carolina's next competition will come Nov. 4-5, when the Tar Heels race at the Head of the Chattahoochee Regatta.
