NORTH CAROLINA POSTGAME NOTES
NORTH CAROLINA VS. WAKE FOREST, OCTOBER 28, 2006
Senior tailback Ronnie McGill rushed a career-high tying 29 times for 117 yards Saturday against Wake Forest. The 117 yards marked his sixth career 100-yard effort and second this season (114 vs. Furman). McGill rushed for an even 100 yards in the first half, but was held to 17 yards on seven carries after intermission. He also caught three passes for 24 yards. McGill also had 29 carries against Wake Forest in 2003.
McGill moved past Ethan Horton (1981-84) into eighth place on his own with his 23rd career rushing touchdown in the second quarter.
Redshirt freshman Andre Barbour moved from tackle to tight end this week and made his first career start as the Tar Heels opened in a two-tight end set. Barbour's first career reception was a one-yard touchdown catch from Joe Dailey in the first quarter.
Junior kicker Connor Barth's go-ahead field goal in the third quarter made him a perfect 6-for-6 on field goal attempts this season.
Senior defensive tackle Shelton Bynum recorded his first sack of the season in the second quarter.
Junior quarterback Joe Dailey made his third start of the season and first since a Sept. 9 loss to Virginia Tech. He finished 13 of 19 for 156 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Redshirt freshman Cam Sexton came off the bench to complete 6 of 10 passes for 80 yards.
The Tar Heels' 80-yard, six-minute, 31-second scoring drive in the first quarter was their longest of the season in terms of time.
Carolina was 3 for 3 on fourth-down attempts today.
The Tar Heels led 17-14 in the third quarter. That was UNC's first lead in the second half since the Furman game in week three.
This was the first time the Tar Heels led going into the final quarter and lost since Maryland beat them, 33-30, in overtime in 2005.
Carolina passed for 236 yards, its second-highest passing yardage output of the season and its high in an ACC game. Dailey's 44-yard completion to Hakeem Nicks on the final drive of the game was Dailey's longest completion of the season (and Nicks's longest catch of the year).
Carolina ran 70 offensive plays, 22 more than the Demon Deacons. Wake was 7 for 8 passing, the first time an opponent attempted less than 10 passes since 1993 (9 attempts by Ohio University).
Carolina is 1-7 overall and 1-4 at Kenan Stadium this year.
