Carolina Falls To FSU In Three

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. --- North Carolina fell to 1-5 in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 30-23, 30-27, 30-21 loss to Florida State Friday night at Tully Gymnasium. FSU's Makini Thompson led all players with 14 kills, while Amy Beaver led Carolina with eight. Heather Brooks added six kills and five blocks for UNC.
Both teams struggled to pass the ball effectively in game one, which led to a number of lengthy scoring runs. The two squads traded 6-1 runs to open the game, and UNC (3-12) won five in a row thanks to four straight service aces by Ashley Board. A Noelle Dyk kill gave Carolina a 17-13 lead before Florida State (11-4, 5-1 ACC) won eight consecutive points to go ahead 21-17. The Tar Heels would respond with a 5-1 run to tie the score at 22, but the Seminoles took eight of the final nine points - three of the last four via service ace - to secure a 30-23 win.
Game two was much more evenly played, with neither team winning more than four points in a row. After a Bekah Brinkley kill tied the score at 23, FSU got two straight to force a Carolina timeout. Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland put down a kill for a side out, but two more Seminole points pushed the lead to three at 27-24 and forced a second UNC timeout. Florida State's second block of the game made it 28-24 before three straight Tar Heel points cut the lead to one. After a Seminole timeout, the hosts got a quick side out and a kill for a 30-27 win.
After a pair of closely contested games, Florida State controlled game three from the start, sealing the match with a 30-21 win. The Seminoles opened up a six-point lead at 12-6 before Carolina made its strongest push of the game to make it 14-12. But the Tar Heels would get no closer. FSU led by as many as 12 at 29-17 before UNC fought off four straight match points.
Carolina will now travel to Coral Gables, Fla., to face Miami Sunday afternoon at 1.
