CORAL GABLES, Fla. --- Behind 10 kills and five blocks from Amy Beaver, North Carolina ended its five-match losing streak in impressive fashion Sunday afternoon, sweeping Miami, 30-28, 30-23, 30-14, at Knight Sports Complex. Noelle Dyk added a team-high 11 kills for UNC, which hit a season-best .320 for the match, including a sparkling .524 mark in the third game.
Carolina (4-12, 2-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) was able to take advantage of an early lead and play from ahead for the duration of game one. Behind two Ashley Board service aces and two Beaver kills, UNC took a 7-2 lead it would never relinquish. The gap grew to six at 23-17 before a 5-1 run by Miami made it 24-22. The teams would trade side outs for the next 11 points, giving Carolina game point at 29-27. UM (6-10, 3-4 ACC) fought off the first game point, but a Beaver tip kill following a lengthy rally gave the Tar Heels the game, 30-28. Beaver and Ingrid Hanson-Tuntland were spotless in the frame, combining for 10 kills on 16 errorless swings.
It was Miami that built an early lead in game two, winning eight of 10 points for an 8-4 lead. Carolina would need most of the first half of the frame to dig out of that hole, regaining the lead for the first time at 16-15 on back-to-back service aces by Stephanie Jansma. At that point it looked like the Tar Heels were in control, as Carolina won 12 of 16 points to amass a 25-18 lead and force Miami's final timeout. The Hurricanes would win four straight after the timeout to trim the lead to three, but UNC took five of the final six points to secure the 30-23 win.
Carolina blew open a tight game three early, cruising to a 30-14 win. After the score was tied for the final time at 8, the Tar Heels did not allow consecutive points to the Hurricanes the rest of the way. Two straight blocks by Heather Brooks provided an emphatic end to Carolina's first win since Sept. 15.
Brianna Eskola had a match-high 11 digs for the Tar Heels, while Hanson-Tuntland finished with nine kills, three blocks and no attack errors. Frannie Savage had a team-best 13 kills to lead UM.
UNC is on the road again next weekend, as the Tar Heels travel down I-85 to face Georgia Tech and Clemson. Friday's match against the Yellow Jackets is set for 7 p.m., while the Saturday tilt with the Tigers will begin at 6.
