CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina's Ben Hunter scored in the seventh minute of play, and Maryland's Stephen King tallied the equalizer midway through the second half, as the No. 3 Tar Heels (10-2-2, 2-2-1 ACC) and the No. 2 Terrapins (10-1-1, 3-1-1 ACC) played to a 1-1 draw Friday in a nationally televised Atlantic Coast Conference match at Fetzer Field. The crowd of 3,581 fans on hand for the Fox Soccer Channel broadcast marked the third largest crowd in UNC men's soccer history.
Hunter gave Carolina an early lead with his third goal of the season and just the sixth allowed by Maryland all year at the 6:55 mark. David Boole started the play with a throw in on the right side, and rookie forward Bill Dworsky flicked a header to Corey Ashe in the center of the field. Ashe then fed an open Hunter on the left for a strike from 22 yards and a 1-0 UNC advantage.
Hunter's goal gave him a share of the UNC scoring lead with 10 points. Ashe's assist was his fourth, which also matches a team high. Dworsky also picked up his second assist on the play.
Maryland's best scoring chance in the first half - a shot by King in the 42nd minute - was halted by a charging UNC keeper Justin Hughes. But King came through after the intermission to knot the score at one in the in the 68th minute off an assist from Graham Zusi. After picking up a loose ball off a corner, Zusi crossed a ball from the left side of the box out to an open King, who buried a strike from the 18 for his fifth goal of the season.
The Tar Heels quickly had a chance to regain the lead when Dworsky was brought down in the box by Maryland's A.J. Delagarza, setting up a Ted Odgers penalty kick at 68:57. But Terrapin keeper Chris Seitz stopped Odgers' strike to the lower left-hand corner of the net to preserve the tie.
Neither team got much going during the rest of regulation, and Hughes punched out a Maryland corner with 1:15 remaining in the second half to send the match to overtime. In extra time, neither squad mustered much of a scoring chance until the Tar Heels' flurry in the final minute of play.
The match was evenly played throughout with Carolina posting a 10-9 edge on the final shot chart. Both teams had three shots in the first half, five in the second and the Tar Heels took two to Maryland's one over the two overtime periods. The Tar Heels have now tied two straight matches and gone to overtime in three of their last four.
Hughes finished with two saves on the night, while Seitz made four stops.
Carolina is back in action at Campbell at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10.
