UNC Earns Weekend's Second Shutout, 6-0 Over Yale

NEWTON, Mass. - Playing a neutral-site game at Boston College's home field, the North Carolina field hockey team beat Yale 6-0 Sunday afternoon at Newton Campus Field behind a hat trick from senior Karen Mann. The win was UNC's second shutout win of the weekend and improved the Tar Heels to 11-4 on the season.
Following Saturday's 4-0 win over No. 4 Boston College, UNC opened quickly on Sunday with two goals in the game's first 12 minutes. Mann scored her first 7:41 into the match on an assist from freshman Danielle Forword. Less than four minutes later, the Tar Heels were awarded a penalty stroke and senior Brooke Miller delivered to make the score 2-0.
The rest of the scoring came in the second half. Junior Jesse Gey notched her second goal of the weekend just 27 seconds into the period on pass from sophomore Britt van Beek. Beginning about 10 minutes later, UNC scored three goals in a span of just over two minutes, with Mann putting in back-to-back unassisted goals and van Beek scoring on an assist from freshman Illse Davids.
For the game, UNC had 29 shots to Yale's six and eight corners to Yale's two. Bulldog goalkeepers Elizabeth Friedlander and Charlotte Goins combined for 14 saves. UNC freshman Brianna O'Donnell made five to earn her third consecutive shutout and seventh of the season.
UNC returns to action on Friday with a game at No. 8 Penn State.
