• The Tar Heels held the 19th-ranked Yellow Jackets scoreless in the first, third and fourth quarters Saturday. Carolina's defense entered the game with just four total scoreless quarters on the year - the fourth period versus Rutgers, Clemson and Miami and the third against Wake Forest.
• The seven points by Georgia Tech were the fewest allowed by UNC this season and the fewest since a 7-5 win over No. 23 Virginia on Oct. 22, 2005. Carolina also held the Jackets to just 221 yards for its best defensive effort of the season. The Tar Heels have now held the opposition to fewer than 300 yards in two of the last three games.
• Carolina held Georgia Tech All-America receiver Calvin Johnson to just three catches for 13 yards. In two career games in Chapel Hill, Johnson totaled just five grabs for 58 yards.
• Saturday's loss was Carolina's third of the season by seven points or less to a team currently ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 - No. 15 Rutgers (21-16), No. 18 Wake Forest (24-17) and No. 19 Georgia Tech (7-0).
• Carolina has now been shutout twice in a season for the first time since 1989. The Tar Heels were blanked 38-0 by Maryland and 41-0 by Duke that season and have been shut out by Virginia 23-0 and Georgia Tech 7-0 this year.
• Saturday's game marked the fewest combined points in a Carolina game since a 3-0 loss to Wake Forest in 1966. The last 7-0 game involving UNC was a win over South Carolina in 1963.
• Sophomore linebacker Chase Rice made his first career interception on a Reggie Ball pass in the third quarter. The interception was just the second of the season for UNC and first since Kareen Taylor picked off a pass at Clemson.
• Rice also picked up his first career sack in the third quarter with a tackle of Ball for a five-yard loss.
• Freshman wide receiver Hakeem Nicks made four catches for 36 yards to move within six of Carolina's rookie reception record of 38 set by Kory Bailey in 1998. Nicks is also now just 66 receiving yards shy of the Tar Heels' freshman record of 609 set by Octavus Barnes in 1994. Nicks now has 32 grabs for 543 yards on the season.
• Senior wideout Jesse Holley made five catches for 32 yards to extend his streak of games with a reception to 28. He now has 120 career grabs and now sits in a tie for eighth on UNC's career list with L.C. Stevens (1995-98).
• Carolina outgained Georgia Tech, 133-117, in the first half but trailed 7-0 at the break. UNC quarterback Joe Dailey was picked off in the end zone on back-to-back drives to close the second quarter.
