CHAPEL HILL --- Meg Eckert had a career-high seven service aces and North Carolina swept Florida State, 30-27, 30-26, 34-32, Thursday night at Carmichael Auditorium. Megan Owens added a double-double (13 kills, 12 digs) for the Tar Heels, while Jackie BonSalle led the Seminoles with a match-high 14 kills.
Carolina (9-19, 7-12 Atlantic Coast Conference) opened game one with a 7-0 run, as the Tar Heels controlled the run of play with superior serving and passing. FSU (17-11, 11-7 ACC) got three points back after a timeout, but UNC quickly pushed its lead out to 10 at 14-4. After a second timeout, the Seminoles began their steady push to erase the deficit.
The `Noles had made up five points before Carolina used its first timeout at 19-14. The Tar Heel lead was still four at 22-18 when head coach Joe Sagula called a second and final timeout. But behind the hitting of BonSalle, who had a game-high six kills in the frame, Florida State would eventually tie the score at 25. UNC would respond with three straight, however, capped by Eckert's fourth ace of the game. The teams traded side outs before Heather Brooks put down the game-winner to end it, 30-27. The service-receive game proved to be the difference, as Carolina logged four aces and no service errors and kept the Seminoles out of rhythm for much of the frame.
Game two was played evenly throughout, with the Tar Heels carrying a working lead of between three and five most of the way. A UNC attack error brought Florida State to within two at 22-20 before an Amy Beaver kill and Eckert's seventh ace of the night pushed it back to four and forced a timeout.
Brooks and Stephanie Jansma teamed up for a block to make it 28-21, and Carolina had its first game point after a pair of side outs. Florida State spoiled the first four attempts at making it 2-0, but Brooks delivered the wining kill for the second time and the Tar Heels held on, 30-26. Owens was steady throughout for UNC, finishing with a game-high six kills.
Game three was back-and-forth and featured 16 ties and three lead changes. Carolina had the first run of the game with a 5-0 spurt to take a 14-10 lead. FSU would quickly win six of eight points to get back to even at 18. The game would be tied eight more times before it was over, the last coming at 32. Carolina had a pair of match points at 29-27, but gave them up on a pair of attack errors. The teams traded side outs until an FSU attack error gave Carolina its sixth match point. Just as in games one and two, Brooks converted the final kill to seal a 34-32 win and the match.
Ashley Board led UNC with 16 digs, while Lauren Prussing added 10 kills. FSU's Summer Weissing led all players with 23 digs.
Carolina will play its final home match Friday night at 8 against Miami. That will be the final appearance at Carmichael Auditorium for seniors Amy Beaver and Meg Eckert.
