Chapel Hill, N.C. ------ Sophomore kick returner Brandon Tate has been named honorable-mention All-America by Pro Football Weekly. Tate set the single-season school record with three touchdowns on kick returns in 2006 (two kickoffs and one punt).
A native of Burlington, N.C., Tate returned 38 kickoffs for a single-season school record 908 yards and two touchdowns this year. He also had 20 punt returns for 194 yards and one touchdown and caught five passes for 72 yards. In Carolina's 45-44 win over Duke in the season finale, Tate became just the ninth player in NCAA history to return both a kickoff and a punt for a touchdown.
The Pro Football Weekly All-America team was selected by PFW personnel analyst Nolan Nawrocki, who consulted with NFL evaluators and put in hours of film study to select players based on talent, production and value to their team. Other All-American qualities such as leadership, resiliency, toughness, competitiveness and character were weighed heavily.
